Finellen (Ellie) Fireforge
The Fireforge clan has lived in the foothills above Hythe for more than 1,000 years. The clan has prided itself on its long history as fine smiths, selling/trading their wares in the town below.
Ellie comes from a long line of female dwarven druids, that is to say, her mother was a druid, and her mother, and her mother and so on. The clan does not know this, however. The women who came before Ellie have secretly protected the clan for many generations by calling on the powers of Moradin and keeping balance of earth, wind, fire and water.
All was well until Ellie was born…
Ellie’s birth was most tragic and set her on a course that would challenge her at every turn. Her mother died in childbirth, sparking a terrible storm that flooded the Fireforge village. Ellie’s father was killed while helping others escape to higher ground. Ellie was found two days later floating on a piece of wood. Because of the clan’s commitment to one another (the saying goes, “As metals are forever forged together, let this clan remain forever forged.”), Ellie was taken care of and raised with love by a woman named Hilde and her husband Baern (themselves unable to conceive a child and close friends of Ellie’s parents, Sybil and Dain).
The clan salvaged what remained of the village, and were able to remain here. Baern took Ellie under his wing and has raised her as he would have his son. 150 years have passed. Ellie has worked hard to become a proficient smith and learned how to use the weapons she makes.
In the last few years, though, Ellie has felt a stirring within her, a feeling of being so much more than she is. She goes to Hilde and confides in her this feeling of power. Hilde, it turns out, was not just a friend of Sybil’s, she was also her secret lover. Sybil shared her druidic powers with Hilde and taught her all she knew of spellcasting and creating balance in the natural world. Hilde now realizes that Sybil must have foreseen a day when she would need to pass on these teachings, and Ellie begins to secretly meet with Hilde daily to learn all she can from her mother’s journals.
A month ago, however, something went terribly wrong in Ellie’s studies. Just as on the night of her birth, a great storm wreaked havoc on the Fireforge village, once again flooding her home. Ellie used a spell to create safe passage and led her clan to safety higher up in the hills. Not a single person was killed. Ellie was sure her mother was smiling down on her with pride.
While the clan was safe for now, the Fireforge village had been completely destroyed this time. Most of the clan were grateful to Ellie and deemed her a hero, however, the leaders of the clan were most unsettled by her use of a spell (remember no one knows about the druidic powers…) and want to banish Ellie from clan. Ellie, with her friends by her side, is able to strike a deal. If she can find a new home for the clan, then she will not be banished (which would be super bad for her and bring shame to her family name).
Ellie packs her bag and her mother’s journals, gives Hilde and Baern her love, and sets out on foot, choosing to head north along the river. She is both frightened (alone without her clan!) and excited (adventures await!) as the sun comes up over the hill, lighting up the dirt path that lies ahead…
She has been traveling now for many days and has found a place to stay in Oakengate. Word has spread throughout the region of the hero dwarf who was kicked out of her clan. Luckily, the innkeeper is sympathetic to her predicament and rents her a room until she decides where to go next. Ellie continues reading her mother’s notes and checks out the local “magic” shop where she meets Torrin.
